Deep in the heart of the desert, where only the bravest(And possibly foolish) dare to go, lives a colony of (alleged) giants. Watch your step, though, because the shifting sands aren't the only dangers here....

Notes mostly for self:
Cert colors: Reds
Cert symbol: Stylized flame
Location: Desert

Territory

Deep in the heart of the desert live the Firekin. The main dens are dug deep into outcrops of stone, shelter from the brutality of the beating sun, with a maintained watering hole sheltered among the rock outcroppings.

While there are ample dunes, there's also ample hard-packed land as well, where the few plants of the territory grow. It's on these plants that some of the few prey animals will graze.

Most prey is small, with a couple residential herds, but seasonally larger herds will pass through the desert on their way elsewhere.

History

According to the stories, the Firekin were created by a goddess. She saw the Ma'ome and found them the most beautiful creatures, but also some of the fiercest, so she took some that had wandered into the desert she lived around and reshaped them to reflect her and her siblings, with coats of reds, whites, and golds of fire, the sun, the desert, the shifting greys of smoke clouds, and the black of charcoal and the deep desert night. She breathed into them their superiority over all, how they were the best of the creatures of the land, tough enough to live somewhere so hostile, and that everything else was beneath them. The only ones they would answer to were to the gods themselves, to the rulers of the colony, and to the priests appointed to speak for them. And then, as much as she had been there, the goddess stepped back.

How true this is, nobody outside the desert knows, but the Firekin believe it deeply with their hearts. The accepted truth is that they were shaped as much by their environment as any colony and they remain proud of their past. Deeply insular, they've let few actually join the colony, but at some point in their past recognized that they couldn't remain too insular and needed outside blood to keep going. As for the actual history, only the royalty and the priesthood might know.

Religion

The Firekin are a deeply religious pride. Any who actively join from outside, or who are forced in, are expected to follow the same worship. Whatever beliefs your Ma'ome had coming in, they're to be left at the border.

The Colony believes in five gods:

Fire, the Goddess of Change - This is the goddess said to have made the colony in the image of herself and her siblings, described as having a coat the deep red of a blood rise, that distinct shade of red the sky takes on as the sun starts to rise over the desert, with a fiery orange dancing across it. It is her that the Firekin look to first, for whom they take their name.

Stalk, the Goddess of the Hunt - Dark as night and painted like the night sky, she was said to be the greatest huntress of all time. It was her blessing, when the Firekin were created, that allowed them to become masters of hunting on the shifting sands.

Find, the God of Passages - Pale as the rare cloud to pass through the sky, marked with whisps of smoke on the wind, the Firekin look to the God of Passages as they travel across the sands that mark their territory. His knowledge and blessings taught them how to pick their paths across the terrain to best travel safely. It is because of him that they know to walk the crest of the dunes, and how to avoid dangerous grounds. He, too, is the god they look to for blessings as they send their loved ones in the passage between life and death.

Seek, the God of Navigation - As gold as the sands and sun, this is the god the Firekin look to, in conjunction with his brother Passages, when they travel the otherwise featureless dunes. He is the god who taught them how to use the stars to navigate, when the shifting sands proved useless as landmarkers.

Fierce, the Goddess of Battles - It's said there are many battles to be had, especially in the desert. They're not only fights between groups of Ma'ome, or Ma'ome against Ma'duwi or other animals, it's the battle to survive in the desert, the fight to survive injury, disease, bringing life into the world. Everybody pays homage to this Goddess, regardless of their position in the Colony. Much like the moralities of what's considered right and wrong, this goddess is often depicted in the greys of smoke, of mist on the sand, with markings much like swirls of smoke in the sky.

Coats and Names

The Firekin are strict about the coats of their members. Full 'actual' members are only allowed to have coats in the following colors with some guidelines:

Reds - All shades of red are acceptable, though pink is considered light red and only permitted in small quantities(Such as muzzle/belly/toe markings). Red is not only a color of fire but the color of blood. Most of the royal family is shades of red. Orange is considered part of the 'red' family of colors due to their association with the Goddess of Change.
Golds - The only shades of gold not acceptable are those that err too much into being brown. All others, from a deep rich gold to pale creamy yellow and even plain yellow are permitted.
Greys - So long as they're not erring into being other colors, like smokey blue or green, all shades of grey are permitted.
Black and White - With no variations, there's no worries about being primarily either color. Ma'ome with primarily black coats are encouraged to take on a nocturnal life, as the Colony fully recognizes that such dark coats are heat sinks and the Ma'ome is likely to suffer in the harsh sunlight.

For names, all cubs born within the colony are expected to have names to do with heat, fire, the desert. Common meanings are fire related, such as flame or burn or scorch, but there have also been Ma'ome with names meaning drought and sun and once even sand. If it doesn't directly have a fire- or heat-related meaning, it must have a desert-related meaning.

During the IT phase, and for 1 year after, this name rule doesn't apply as much to converted pets from the original Firekin - It's been years so a lot of us have forgotten name meanings and/or language to translate again, so if your Ma'ome was converted from an SoA and you forgot the exact meaning and/or language used, that's okay!

Ranks

Royalty
King/Queen - The current ruler of the pride. If the current ruler fails to have an heir before they pass, their next sibling's oldest child will become the new ruler, otherwise it falls upon the clergy to determine a new ruling family if the dynasty has been deemed to have run dry(No heirs within two generations of the last king or queen).
Consort - The mate of the current king or queen
Heir/ess - The heir or heiress to the throne, they're usually the oldest living child
Prince/Princess - Siblings to the current king or queen, as well as the non-heir children of the current king or queen.
No further titles exist for royalty.

Clergy
High Priests/Priestesses - Totally in 5, the criteria are that they must be the most experienced of the oldest, and each must have as a dominant color one of the five accepted colorations to reflect their gods. If the current dynasty of the royal family has been deemed to have run dry, they are the ones who determine the new heir.
Priest/ess - Any Ma'ome who is involved in the religion. Their chief responsibility is to teach all the cubs of the colony about the gods.
Accolyte - Cub and Adolescent Ma'ome who are learning to become part of the clergy

Common
Guard - They patrol the borders and bring in any tresspassers
Hunt lead - The most experienced hunter or huntress in the colony, they delegate who is on what hunting party.
Hunter/Huntress - The common catch-all rank. Ma'ome of this rank can do other minor stuff, such as crafting, cubsitting, or storytelling, but their primary job is to hunt.
Youth - Cubs and adolescents of the colony

Slave - Any unlucky creature who's wandered into the colony's lands and been caught. Typically they're the Ma'ome who don't have the proper coat colors, such as browns, greens, purples, blues, etc. They're often tasked with the jobs nobody wants, such as digging or cleaning dens and running messages, and often the last to eat. If they have any cubs that are the appropriate colors, said cubs become Youths and are brought into the colony as regular members. Beyond that, they're still fully expected to follow the colony's religious beliefs. The only exemption they have is to the naming rules, provided their cubs aren't of colony colors.

Mates and breeding

Go nuts, touch butts! The Firekin allow any (adult-only) pairing, but non-slave members are NOT permitted to rogue breed! They may only have cubs with other colony members(Including slaves). Flings are fine, but if they have any mates, they are expected to ONLY have cubs with their mate(s).

Slaves are permitted to rogue breed, but must remember that any cubs born with acceptable colony colors will be taken and raised by either an adopting family or the clergy if nobody can or will take them.

Okay! Exception made for pets converted from SoA because, uh... Time and memory are things that don't always get along rofl Yes, this means even if your pet is named after, say, Fire Nation characters, they get a pass, too
