While others cheered, Hina'ea bit the inside of her cheek, subduing the pout threatening to surface. Yes, she was excited, deep down, but she was also annoyed that she had to be a judge, of all things. When her parents had informed her of the duty she had successfully tamed her disappointment with a wide smile and good-natured "Okay!"
But it wasn’t okay — she wanted to participate.
Still, she refused to become a stereotype. No "but mooooom", no sulking complaints — she would be a proper, proud Ali’Keiki, just as her parents had raised her to be.
Her gaze drifted to her mother’s belly, eyes squinting as a harsh ray of sunlight caught her vision. Soon, she’d have new siblings, and that thought sparked a rolling warmth in her chest. She was thrilled at the idea of becoming a big sister. How her mother managed both her responsibilities and pregnancy, Hina’ea couldn’t begin to understand — but then again, Te Fiti had always been an inspiration in her own way.
"Haaaaa, at least everyone is enjoying themselves," she murmured, watching the rest of the colony at play.
The hidden frown softened into a fond smile. Even if she couldn’t compete, seeing her colony happy, healthy, and merry was enough for now.
Her eyes flicked once more, scanning the crowd for a familiar face. Hina hadn't spent much time with those outside of her immediate family, although she hoped to work on that soon. No, she was specifically looking for a certain ma'duwi, who she had yet to spot amongst the flurry of paws and cheers. Ugh, he was probably doing something important, and secret, like he always did. She exhaled a quick, annoyed huff, head swiveling to return at watching her colony compete.
She'd have to make sure to catch his ear after the festivities.

.jpg) “You’re doing quite well so far, brother! Keep it up!” Hercules exclaimed as he moved Kainoa brought up his second round of fish. So far, he was the fisherman that Herc was noticing in the lead. Of course, there were fewer fishermen than Peleee’s from his childhood. But what the colony currently lacked in numbers, they made up for in spirit. Still, some light teasing for encouragement certainly couldn’t hurt. Sometimes all you needed was a right kick in the butt to light the fire under you. “Fire child is hungry! Put your backs into it, or I’ll be feedin’ ya to her instead!”

Nanuk was tired, sore, and hungry. He had been out for the last few weeks on a reconnaissance mission, following a specific warband to gather information on numbers and rankings. No sooner did he step foot on the golden sandy beaches of his newfound home did the very round chief grab onto his tail and drag him off to the ceremony grounds, proclaiming in her far too loud voice how much fun he would have if he joined in the festivities. Ugh, he didn’t want fun, he didn’t want kinship, he didn’t want to “enjoy the season.” All he wanted to do was crawl into a nice, quiet, dark hole and sleep for the next few days after engorging himself on fish until his belly was full. Yet, here he was. Te Fiti had seen fit to drape him in a brightly colored lei necklaces, and flowers in his bushy mane to “offset the moody glare,” he gave everyone who looked in his direction. Thankfully, he wasn’t on duty, so he was free to sulk and travel around the grounds as he saw fit. If he was going to be stuck here, there was one particular spotted princess he was keen on checking in on. For safety reasons, of course! No other reason. None at all. “You look utterly enthusiastic and not at all like a child watching the other kids play without her.” He remarked as he casually stepped from behind her, his sarcastic monotone voice broke through the chaos of the crowd. His eyes scanned over Hina’s form, noting her furrowed brow and her annoyed expression. “Not feeling the festive spirit, princess?” He inquired, his eyebrow raising as the hint of an amused smirk tugged at his lips.

Tres Leche let out a dramatic sigh as she rolled her shoulders. She had been hearing about this event from the other dancers ever since she joined the Nani’Kai. It was the biggest performance of the year and the perfect opportunity to showcase the skills one had developed. At last, her moment to shine had arrived! She would prove that even though she was a newcomer to the colony, she had the stuff to make it with the other performers. Perhaps, this would even allow her to be accepted officially into the Ho’ike ranks! One teeny tiny problem with her grand plan, though…she was late! Ahhh! “I’m here!” She exclaimed in a breathless tone as she rushed through the crowds to the ring of performers already in the midst of their dances. “I’m not too late to join in, am I?”

Toa's excitement was building. He looked forward to this time of year and stood to the side, trying to remain calm as he waited for Chief Te'Fiti to announce the opening events of the day. He truly enjoyed this festival each year and was hopeful this would be the year for him to win. Soon, the announcements were made, and a most unexpected prize was proclaimed. Toa's eyes grew wider. That would be amazing to win on top of the bragging rights among his fellow fishers. A hearty Chee-hoo resounded from him as he took off for the warm, turquoise water to begin the fishing event. Bounding out into the water at first, he soon began to cautiously walk out to where he knew the fish could be gathering. His trusty net on his shoulder, he stopped near his usual first spot and waited. Success! A nice couple of fish swam into view and he caught both as he pulled his head from the water and quickly held out his net bag to hold the squirming fish. Toa was very pleased with himself and turned his head side to side to see if more fish were coming toward him. He did a quick shake to throw off some water as it had started to drip into his eyes.
Movement appeared in the water after a few moments. He prepared himself to strike. Two more fish were snatched up, and he dropped them in his bag. The flopping fish were slapping against his side. Luckily, he was practiced at staying extra still. Another strike and one more fish was caught, joining the others in the bag.
He shook his head again to fling off the water. Looking around, he saw a few others fishing and then noticed Kainoa. He had quite a paw full of fish. He's going to be my biggest competition, Toa thought as he looked back towards the water. A fish swam into his view, and two more fish were snagged. He was still grinning as he shoved the two fish into his bag.

He laughed at Hercules mild teasing. "Ohh no...I wouldn't taste very good. You wouldn't want to feed me to her." He chuckled and teased back. His jokes weren't very good but he could laugh at himself anyway. After missing the last time, he was more focused and managed to catch a few fish this time. He took his bounty to the edge of the water, placing them with the rest. He looked around. More Ma'ome had joined him in the water now. He was happy for the competition and company. "Aloha!" he called to the newcomers. "Ah, mai mai." I'm hunting!Points this round: 1 Total points thus far: 11

"Aloha," he called out to his fellow fishers, a smile bright on his face. It would seem that Toa's luck was holding out, and he picked a good spot for the time being. He knew that with as many in the ocean at the moment, it would be a slightly harder time, as the fish may get spooked more easily. The fish he was currently holding were fighting their way out, but his bag had been well-made, and they would not escape. The fish just kept swimming by him, and he was successful most of the time. A couple of times, they slipped by, but there were plenty more that followed. Toa just couldn't believe how good a spot he picked. He managed to grab 5 in succession. "Chee-hoo," he said loudly. With this many fish, he was sure to win. He wouldn't worry about the competition just yet, and kept focusing on the fish nearby. I'm hunting!Points this round: 10 Total points thus far: 18

The last round didn't go so well. He wondered if he might need to change his fishing spot. He ventured further from the others and began his hunt again. It seemed to work. He caught many more fish this time in his new spot. He took the ones he caught back to shore again and eager to get started again, raced back to his spot. " Late, late, late!" Kaimana chanted with a wince as he hurried towards the gathering. He had gotten distracted by studying one of the many mapped out routes he would soon be traveling, well hopefully be traveling. If he got the position, which he would if he kept being late to important gatherings. Oh man he hoped his parents didn't notice he wasn't there yet! Still he heard the gathering even before he saw it, violet eyes going wide with wonder then joy at seeing so many of his people as well as some new faces! Even better there was his father! " Papa! Papa! Aloha Papa!"

With his bag full to bursting, Toa decided to run back to shore to drop off his load. Quickly he shifted off the pack and unloaded the fish. The Fire Child is sure to be pleased with their catch so far, Toa thought as he placed his bag back on. Turning toward the ocean, he ran back out until his legs were just over ankle deep, then he carefully waded towards another spot, assuming that someone might have moved to his former spot. Toa hoped that this new spot would prove just as lucky. He moved until the ocean was a few inches below his belly. He waited patiently for the fish to start moving to his new spot. After about 10 minutes, he was ready to keep move on, then a fish swam into view. Snap went his jaws, but the fish was too fast for him. Ugh, he thought, making sure to stay very still again. He then decided to be even more patient. The fish would come. I'm hunting!Points this round: 0 Total points thus far: 18

Despite his attention first being snagged by his father, it didn't take long until it was also snagged by the music that the ho'ike were playing. Kai's ears twitched in time with the music, then his tail began thumping this way and that, followed by his weight shifting from paw to paw, until at last he leapt to his feet, "Sorry Papa I gotta go! The music calls to me!!" Abandoning his father, Kaimana bolted for the dance area, leaping into the fray with a joyus laugh.

Kainou barely heard his son calling to him over the sounds of the water splashing. He turned to reply but he was already on his way towards the dancing area. "Aloha!" he called after him, chuckling with a fish clench in his teeth. He took the fish to the pile and went back to his spot, back to work. I'm hunting! "Ah, mai mai!" he called to her. Then he spotted a familiar ma'ome rushing towards the water. His brother had finally arrived. He assumed that Kaimana would join their father fishing, but it wasn't long til he was coming over to the dancing area. "Aloha brother!"

Te’Fiti smiled wildly as she observed the hustle and bustle of everyone enjoying themselves. It was so good to see everyone embracing the rituals of old, and having such a good time while doing it! Though not everyone may understand the full cultural importance of what they were doing, just the fact that they were giving it their all made her heart swell with pride. This was her colony, her family, and they were thriving. The Nani’Kai, through these traditions and rituals, would live on past her and continue to grow for generations to come. Speaking of generations, the new set of beach bums growing in her belly shifted uncomfortably. Almost in protest of their own to show their unhappiness at not being able to be there in person for the festivities. “Soon, little ones,” Te’Fiti grunted as she lifted herself from her perch. “Soon enough.” For now, she would need to put her discomfort aside and put on a front for socializing. She was one of the main judges for most of the contests after all! “What amazing bounties! The Fire Child will be fat and happy today.” Te’Fiti commented as she peered over at the overflowing baskets of fish. The Ocean Mother had certainly blessed the colony today and was eager to feed her child with her gifts. “We’ve officially reached the halfway point, everyone! Please feel free to take a break and come enjoy some of the food prepared by our wonderful, hardworking cooks.” She called out to the hunters making their way to shore. Though bringing in a large harvest was important, she also wanted to encourage them to take breaks and make sure they weren’t pushing themselves over their limits.

Tres Leche was in the heat of the groove with the low rhythmic thumping of the drums and singing lulling her into an almost trace with the music guiding her steps. Her body twisted and turned in a graceful, almost snake-like wave. Her tail swished behind her, accentuating her movements to highlight their smooth and fluid quality. She was killing it - well, until in a split second, she went from lost in song to knocked a** over head onto the sand as a very excited fellow contestant who happened to be late burst onto the scene! “OOF-” She bleated loudly as she was jolted back to reality. Three slow blinks followed, her mind struggling to regain what exactly had happened. “The heck…?”
